Psssst, this place does whole lobster for £20 with a great view of the river! Don't tell anyone.
The Lobster House opened 10th of February 2014 in the newly developed Riverside area of Putney just east of Wandsworth Park. The Lobster House serves dishes that use freshly caught seafood from only sustainable suppliers. Steamed or grilled New England Live lobster is the focal point of the menu, which also includes signature dishes such as Lobster rolls, New England clam chowder, Ciopino – an Italian seafood casserole, Wagyu burgers and 24-hour slow cooked ribs of beef.
Antonia and I had a table booked for 19:30 on a Friday night and were really looking forward to some delicious seafood. It was also a good reason to make the trip south of the river. It’s a trip we only do rarely and this reminded us why. It takes ages to get here from where we live in North London and it even took Antonia an hour from Tottenham Court Road area… “This place had better be good” we both said as we arrived.
On the walk to the restaurant from Putney Bridge station I noticed a huge amount development going on along Putney Bridge Road and eventually cut through one of the eerily quiet new estates to get down to the waterfront and find The Lobster House hidden in amongst the new blocks.
I arrived before Antonia (as per usual) and was greeted by the friendly staff and shown to a slightly wobbly table with equally wobbly chair. The place was completely empty but that made perfect sense. It’s only a month old and surely the only people who know The Lobster House even exists live in the blocks of flats that seem to surround the restaurant. As the evening went on a few other couples came in but sadly it never got busy, especially for a Friday night. However, based on our experience at The Lobster House that will all change, soon.
Wines are very reasonable, ranging from £15.50 to £30. The champagne on offer is equally fairly priced, starting at £30. We opted for a bottle of Chardonnay – Giesen Marlborough 2012 for £19.95, which was nice and light.
The starter section of the menu is full of seafood – oysters, lobster bisque, clam chowder and smoked eel amongst others. I ordered the Cornish Crab Cake (£7.50), which was very nice and full of crab meat but maybe a little small for the price. I was pleased to see that Antonia’s Grilled Squid (£9.50) came whole, including tenticles rather than in boring rings but it was a tad overcooked and again, a bit steeply priced.
On to the main course we both had to have a whole lobster – we rarely have it and usually share one if we do so decided this was the night to go big. I’d had a look at the menu online and seen that they offer New England Live Lobsters – steamed or grilled, served with skinny fries & dressed salad in three sizes;
1.25lb for £20.00
1.50lb for £25.00
2.00lb for £30.00
On the night the 1.25lb option was the only one on the menu. I was a bit disappointed as I was planning on taking on the 2lb beast but in retrospect, 1.25lb was plenty! The lobster comes cracked (as you’d expect) and with a small plate of tools, including a super cool lobster bib. None of the other diners got in to the spirit of things but we proudly donned our bibs and got ready for battle.
They were well cooked, the claws were full of meat and the tail yielded a huge chunk of delicious meat. Suddenly the £20 price tag was looking like an absolute steal. The skinny fries were superbly crisp and the pot they came seemed to be bottomless. The dressed salad was also a very tasty addition to the overall dish. On to dessert we shared a lovely Pineapple Tarte Tatin (£5) between us, topped with a generous scoop of sorbet which was a nice twist on the traditional.
We were both impressed with The Lobster House. The service was very good and the lobster itself is great value. There is USDA steak and other meat dishes on the menu but I don’t know why you’d look past the great selection of fresh seafood on offer here. It’s just a shame it’s in such an awkward area – a 15 min walk to the nearest station and there’s little to no footfall, especially in the evenings.
Having said that, being so seemingly isolated it would be a great restaurant to hire out as you’d get a good amount of privacy and one of the main features of the restaurant is its sole use of a pontoon on the waterfront, which has a built for purpose bar. The building itself has a large, glass covered curved frontage looking out on to the river, which will be lovely on a summer’s evening or at the weekend.
