MEATliquor, W1

This super trendy burger joint serves up good food but is it worth the inevitable wait?

Jack had been to MEATliquor before with a group of his colleagues and come back raving about it so after getting bored of hearing “We should go to MEATliquor tonight!!” EVERY night for a couple of weeks we decided to check it out. Having heard about this place for a while from various other people I was surprised at how cheap the prices were on the menu with burgers ranging from just £6.50 to £8.00.

Jack had mentioned that you can’t book, so we should try and get there early to avoid the after work rush. We failed and joined the back of the queue by the bins outside. I’ve never seen such strict queuing before, a member of staff comes down the line and stamps everyone’s hand to make sure that no one can jump in, so if anyone from your group is running late you may as well just go to the pub and wait for them as you’ll get moved to the back when they turn up anyway.

We waited about 30 minutes to get in the doors and rather than be seated we were told to go and wait at the bar for our name to be called. This was annoying as you have no idea how much longer you’ve got to wait. We got a drink at the bar and after about 10 minutes we were seated on the main circular table in the middle of the entrance section (shown in the bottom image below).

The service was good but it’s not a great place to meet and have a chat, the music was loud and the shape of our table meant it was pretty hard to have a conversation without shouting at each other. There are also quite a few bar style seats, which if you’re a group means you’ll end up sitting in a row rather than across from each other. I’m sure you could wait for a more suitable table, but when you’ve already queued twice the thought of doing it for a third time isn’t exactly appealing.

I went for the Dead Hippie, which is made of 2 beef patties, dead hippie sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles and minced white onion, which nothing special. Following a great American tradition, there’s an eating challenge – ‘The Triple Chilli Challenge’ consisting of a Chilli Dog, a Green Chilli Cheeseburger and a portion of Chilli Cheese Fries with a 10 minute time limit. Jack has tried and failed but the current record stands at 2mins 47s… Pretty impressive.

I was pretty happy with the food, good burgers and cheese fries and massive onion rings and it’s incredibly reasonable. I think MEATliquor is the kind of place to go to early to avoid the queues or late, with a group, when you’ve been drinking anyway, want to carry on and need some food to keep you going. I’d probably go back, but maybe only at 3pm on a Wednesday when there probably won’t be a queue.
