Inamo, SW1

It's not often you come away from a restaurant saying the table was more memorable than the food

Inamo is an oriental fusion restaurant with two London locations, one in Soho and one in St. James. The big draw is the interactive menu, which is projected from above, effectively turning your table in to one big screen. You place your order via the table and then your waiter come and delivers it. I imagine it’s a great place to take kids or for a first date, but I was here with my brother. He’d been before, thought it was a good laugh and wasn’t wrong!

As you come in you can’t help but notice the light and crazy patterns (which you can change) coming off the tables and the guests dragging their fingers over them. You can’t wait to be seated to you can play with it as well. It works quite well but you have to drag a cursor around so it’s nowhere near as slick as the tablets we’ve become used to over the last few years. Still, it’s a really nice idea and having nice big images of dishes appear in front of you definitely helps you make your mind up. Having spent a bit of time in Japan, which you can read about here it’s not a new concept to me, although the system in Japan involved a wall mounted touch screen rather than a projection on your table.

Sadly, the food didn’t live up to expectations and the portions were pretty stingy. We ordered a range of starters and a main to share, but once we saw the size of the main we just ended up ordering more starters, which were much better value for money. The food was all fine, but not memorable and the table was definitely the star of the show.

Without the interactive table, Inamo would just be another overpriced, forgettable restaurant in Central London. It’s worth going to to have a play but make sure you’re not going for the food. As I said earlier, as a destination for a first date when you need something to break the ice, Inamo would be a safe bet.
