A great fusion idea but sadly, poorly executed
Como3 Cantina Chic claims to be a unique Spanish Tapas and Pan-Asian concept. There are plenty of good reviews floating around the interweb and I’ve been itching to see what all the fuss is about.
My brother was free last week so we decided to meet up in Angel for a couple of beers (at Taproom of course) and some grub. I checked my Scoff list and picked Como3. We turned up at 19:00 on a Thursday night to find an almost empty restaurant with just one other table in use. I couldn’t find a menu online so I wasn’t really sure what to expect. Our waitress came over with an amuse bouche, which was a shot of lovely, creamy mushroom soup and we ordered a couple of cocktails. I had the Mojito Como3 (£8.50) made with cognac instead of rum and my brother had a rather watery Bloody Mary (£8.50).
The menu had some interesting fusion dishes but the dishes were mainly spanish tapas or pan-asian rather than a blend of the two. We had the Morcilla Gyoza (£9) but sadly they were undercooked leaving the wrappers hard and the soft texture of the morcilla meant the gyoza lacked any kind of bite at all. The Pan Con Tomate (£4) was superb, I forget how good such simple dishes can be. Our Chips with Salsa Brava (£3.20) turned up without the salsa brava and when I complained it was brought over cold. I don’t know if it was supposed to be cold or not but the temperature killed any flavour that should have come through.
The Mini Pork Trotters (£3.50) were well cooked, had an interesting texture but I found them almost completely tasteless. They also came served on dollops of tartare sauce, which overpowered any flavour the trotters had and in my opinion didn’t work at all as a combination. The Ham Croquetas (£4) were decent and the 5 Herbs Pork Cheeks on pickled, caramelised onions (£11.50) was a very nice dish – the meat fell apart and was beautifully rich.
I can’t say that Como3 impressed me. The Pan Con Tomate was very close to being the best dish if it hadn’t been for the Pork Cheeks. The service was ok but you shouldn’t be forgetting or undercooking things if there are only two tables to serve and I thought the cocktails were poor, especially my brother’s bloody mary. There are probably some great dishes on the menu but sadly, we didn’t order them.
