Great value pre-theatre menu in a grand setting
After lying derelict for almost 60 years, Boyds Brasserie opened in 2010 after a massive restoration and refurbishment of this old government building. The bar and restaurant sit in a stunning, opulent space inside 8 Northumberland Avenue.
I was looking for a good pre-theatre menu as Antonia and I had tickets to the hilarious ‘One Man, Two Guvnors’, which really is as good as all the reviews claim and thought that Boyds had the right balance of choice and value – some of the other menus I looked only had a choice of 2 dishes per course. We had a table booked for 17:30 on a Friday evening, but there was really no need. The dining room was completely empty although there were some people at the bar.
We were shown to a nice table in the back right corner of the dining room and looked over the menu. The pre-theatre menu is available from 12:00 – 15:00 as well as 17:00 – 19:00 and costs a very reasonable £15.90 for two courses or £18.90 for three. One of the reasons I chose Boyds was because it has a British tapas section to the menu, which you can choose 2 dishes from as your starter. It’s got a good range of dishes including Roasted Belly of Pork with apple sauce and Lobster Scrambled Egg, toasted soldiers but we went for the Goat’s Cheese, Beetroot & Rocket Salad, Salmon & Cod Fishcake with pea puree, Smoked Chicken, Rabbit & Pistachio Terrine and Roast Venison with mulled wine pear and horseradish cream as well as a portion of bread, which came with a little bowl of English radishes for no apparent reason – I asked our waiter (who was excellent by the way) if he knew why it came with radish but he didn’t have “the foggiest”. The fishcakes were very good but we would have preferred larger chunks of beetroot in the salad and I didn’t the terrine was particularly flavoursome – I definitely couldn’t taste any pistachio.
For our main course we ordered a bottle of Muscadet Sevre (£23) and Antonia had the Pan Seared Rainbow Trout with swiss chard, wild mushrooms and lemon dressing, which was good but very salty. My Roast Breast of Free Range Chicken with basmati rice, chasseur sauce and mange tout was lovely and the portions were generous, we had two pieces of fish and chicken each.
If you’re ordering off the à la carte, there’s a brilliantly titled Pasty & Pint for 2 to share, which is actually a Fillet of Beef Wellington with Sauteed New Potatoes, Fine Beans, & Madeira Jus served with a pint of Clos Maucaillou Bordeaux for £55.90. Pint of wine? Class.
We shared the Duo of Cheese with apple jelly, grapes, celery and biscuits for dessert, which came with a candle as it was Antonia’s birthday! Again, a generous portion with two big slabs of cheese.
Boyds Brasserie provides a good value menu in a lovely setting just a few minutes from Trafalgar Square. A couple of the tapas dishes were a let down but overall I was impressed with the quality and service and would happily go back again – three courses for less than £20 is a great deal, especially in a setting as grand as this.
