Antonia had the brioche French toast with maple bacon which comes with a small pot of crème fraîche and I had the Toulouse sausage & butter bean stew with a fried duck egg along with a perfect flat white. Both were superb, the brioche was toasted but still incredibly delicate and when added to the sweet maple syrup, salty bacon and cold crème fraîche made a stunning mouthful of food. My stew was everything a sausage stew should be, bold and full of flavour. The fried egg on top added to the dish with it’s runny yolk blending in to the stew as you dip your bread in.
We’ve been to Assiette Anglaise for dinner as well and were impressed again. There are some French classics on the menu. I had the ever popular Steak Tartare and Coq au Vin. Both were delicious and the portions are a good size as well so you feel like you’re getting your money’s worth. Dinner isn’t cheap but I think it’s good value considering the quality, service and portion sizes.
Assiette Anglaise should be the kind of place that has a queue outside for brunch every weekend and that you have to book a few weeks in advance to get a table on a Friday night. However, it just doesn’t seem that busy when we’ve been there. I don’t think the location helps, it’s a little out of the way. Maybe it’s still new enough that people don’t know about it or maybe it’s just not good enough to cause a stir. Either way, the locals know about it I’m sure will continue to support this very good neighbourhood restaurant.
