I’ve been here before, a couple of times. Once for a friend’s birthday and then for a Sunday lunch and have enjoyed it every time. It’s a lovely building, high ceilings, lots of comfy seating for groups and a dining room at the rear. It also has a large beer garden, which I intend to spend some time in later in the year.
Last time I here was fun Sunday lunch, when I had half a roast Shropshire chicken with parsley & thyme butter. It was good pub food, but I wasn’t overly impressed with it – I seem to recall a lack of vegetables, so I wasn’t too excited about ordering this time. The menu has fancier versions of some British classics, Free range Gloucester Old Spot sausages, kale mash & red wine gravy, Beer battered cod & skin-on chips with crushed peas & tartare and an Ox cheek & red wine pie with buttered kale & mash as well as a couple of burger options amongst others.
James ordered the Pork & chorizo burger with caramelised red onion & fries at £10.75, while Zoe and I both had the Handmade British cheese burger & fries, which was £9.75, which you could add bacon to for £1.25 or BBQ pulled pork for £2.50. Obviously we both decided to add pulled pork and what a decision that was! It was the best burger I’ve had for a long time. The burger was caramelised but still nice and juicy and the pulled pork on top just set it off perfectly, salty pork with a sweet, tangy BBQ glaze. Awesome. James also loved his burger, which had just enough Chorizo to give it a lift without being too overpowering.
On to dessert. Zoe is known for her sometimes obsessive cheese eating so there was only one thing on the menu for her, the Cheese board with Taw Valley Cheddar, Cropwell Bishop Stilton & Cornish Brie. James opted for the Dark chocolate brownie with vanilla pod ice cream and I had the Sticky toffee pudding with the same ice cream.
I’ve enjoyed The Ranelagh every time I’ve been there and as well as a good atmosphere, the food is consistently good. I’m sure The Ranelagh is part of a small chain along with the Alwyne Castle in Highbury. They both have good food and service as well as two of the best beer gardens in North London but I’m not sure who owns them. One thing’s for sure, whoever does is doing a good job.
