It turns out Hawksmoor does more than steak, and they do it very well

I’ve been wanting to go to Hawksmoor for months and months but am have yet to find myself there, eating a massive steak. Kat’s trip to Hawksmoor Seven Dials recently and my mediocre steak at Barbecoa have only increased my urges. My birthday’s coming up, so you never know, someone might take me to the one of the restaurants (hint hint) but for this Friday night, Antonia and I settled for a trip to the Hawksmoor Spitalfields Bar.

Hawksmoor Spitalfields is pretty subtle from the outside and the main dining room upstairs didn’t look anything special as we peeked in before heading downstairs to the bar. The bar itself is stunning as you can in the images below, it just oozes cool and class. As we were only a table of two, we were sat on a small round table with bar  stools against a white tiled pillar. There are a few booths running down one side of the room for larger groups, which have bright blue tiles and copper ceilings. I’ll certainly be requesting one of those next time!

Our waiter (Richard) comes over with some water and we get chatting about the menu and cocktails. We’re essentially told that everything’s amazing but for different reasons so we dive in and order cocktails and food all at once. I had a Full Fat Old Fashioned Butter-infused Bourbon and Sugar (£12.00). Pretty unusual but tasty drink, I could definitely taste the butter! Antonia had a Green & Red Margarita Tequila, Lime, Lemon & Agave Syrup (£7.50) which was nice and punchy.

Food wise we shared a Chilli Cheese Dog (£10), a Shortrib French Dip (£12), a portion of Triple Cooked Chips (£4) and some Jalapeno Coleslaw (£3.50). The ‘dog’ part of the chilli cheese dog was pretty generous and had a nice smoked flavour while still being juicy, thanks to the 50/50 pork and beef split but I did think there was a lack of chilli on it. The shortrib french dip came in a long roll with a small jug of indulgently rich bone marrow gravy to dip it in. Delicious rib meat covered in cheese, in a bun, with gravy? Awesome. I didn’t think the triple cooked chips were any better than chips that had only had the pleasure of being cooked once but they were perfectly good none the less. The coleslaw was good but I couldn’t detect any jalapeno in it at all, maybe they’re playing it a bit too safe with that one.

Then came the eternal battle of dessert vs another starter? This time, another starter won and we went for the Shortrib Nuggets (£7) which were AMAZING! The same shortrib meat from the french dip, formed in to generous size nuggets, with a bit of cheese in the middle, breadcrumbed and deep fried… We could’ve eaten a thousand of them. We had another round of cocktails as well, Antonia had another margarita and I tried Shaky Pete’s Ginger Brew (£9.50) which is Gin, Ginger, Lemon & London Pride. Lovely drink with the beer and lemon making it smooth and zesty at the same time.

Although Hawksmoor is famous for it’s steaks, the bar is proof that they do other things and do them very well. If you don’t want a steak then this is a great alternative and the place has a relaxed atmosphere if you just want to nibble and drink. So, no steak for me yet, but soon… Probably.
